UPAN Meeting – April 2017

Many people have no idea what course to take after the verdict has been handed down and their loved one ends up in prison on an indeterminate sentence. Attorneys Lorenzo Miller and Patrick Shea will make up a panel of post-conviction attorneys to talk about issues related to appeals, board hearing preparation, what services an attorney can provide to help an inmate and family prepare for a hearing, etc. Please note that UPAN does not endorse specific attorneys or offer legal advice, but we feel it would be beneficial for advocates to hear from experts in their field on the matter. Questions will be submitted beforehand in writing in order to keep the forum orderly and on topic. Please let one of the UPAN staff know prior to the meeting if you would like our guests to address a certain topic. Free and open to the public.

Focus Meeting – June 2017

The Utah Department of Corrections invites interested community members to attend Focus, a discussion forum, at the Region 3 Adult Probation & Parole office in Salt Lake City. This meeting will cover Adult Probation and Parole. Director Jim Hudspeth will deliver a short presentation and answer questions. The office is located at 36 W. Fremont Avenue and the Focus meetings are in the conference room to the right of the main entrance.

We will be screening NOT FOR RENT! a film documentary by Metamora Films. The feature length film highlights individuals and families who are struggling in finding rental housing due to their prior felony convictions. In one particular case in the film, Tonia, who has a felony dating back almost 30 years, faces discrimination from several Northern Utah property managers.

Directed and produced by Matt Duhamel, this powerful and unique film also focuses on Utah’s Good Landlord Program and how it affects tenants and landlords. The film not only speaks on Utah’s challenges when it comes to landlords and property owners renting to ex-felons, it also has a national focus on the wider issues of prison recidivism, social ostracism, and the recent April 4th, 2016 announcement by the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) which states: “A landlord that imposes a blanket prohibition on any person with any conviction record (regardless of when the conviction occurred, what the conviction was for, or what the convicted person has done since) will be hard-pressed to prove the policy is necessary to achieve a valid housing-related interest.” Free and open to the public.

About UPAN

When a friend or loved one ends up in prison, it’s a grueling experience for all involved as the inmate and his or her supporters try to adjust to the rules, regulations and restrictions of a life separated by bars.

The Utah Prisoner Advocate Network aims to make navigating that new life less complicated and lonely for inmates’ supporters while also advocating for better conditions inside the prison.

UPAN is a proud coalition member of People Not Prisons, a group of advocacy groups working on behalf of people with mental health conditions, people recovering from substance use disorders, and men and women caught up in Utah’s criminal justice system.
