SUMMARY:Special Event: #cut50 5th Annual National Day of Empathy (Virtual Only)
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE 3/14/2020: Due to COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus concerns and the Governor Gary Herbert’s prohibition of gatherings of 100 or more\, #cut50 and UPAN organizers have decided to cancel the in-person event and instead provide video recordings of our speakers along with some other top influencers in the criminal justice reform space. We’ll post this to all of our social media pages as well as the UPAN and #cut50 websites. Thanks for your support! \n#cut50 5th Annual Day of Empathy Special National Event\nWednesday\, March 25th\, 2020 \nTopic: On March 25th\, hundreds of activists will meet with elected officials across all 50 states and in Washington\, D.C.\, sharing their experiences and stories\, and exemplifying the human consequences of a criminal justice system that has gotten too big\, too unfair\, and too brutal. Grassroots networks all across the country will be mobilized to spotlight their local efforts and unite under a unified banner to highlight the strength of the criminal justice reform movement. By bringing impacted people and their families together with elected officials and using media and storytelling to share their stories\, we can create empathy on a massive scale for millions of Americans behind bars and their loved ones. Free and open to the public. Live stream on Facebook Live will be available. \nAbout Day of Empathy\nMillions of people suffer behind bars. There are 2.2 million locked away in the United States\, about 25 percent of the world’s total. Out of sight\, they are not just “out of mind.” If we are honest: they are mostly out of our hearts\, as well. \nToo many men and women are unnecessarily incarcerated as a result of the failed policies of the past. Our prison and jail populations grew by more than 400% over the past 30 year\, and there are now nearly 7 million people incarcerated\, on parole\, or on probation. 70+ million Americans have a criminal record. \nThe incarcerated live day after day\, divorced from the empathy of most of human society. They are brutalized\, neglected or otherwise mistreated. We know this. But we look away. We go on with our lives. We let the terrors drag on. This abandonment of our sisters and brothers to such horrors\, committed in our name\, is made possible by a massive “empathy gap” — our inability to see ourselves in those who are incarcerated. \nWe envision a criminal justice system that recognize the humanity of the 2.2 million people currently behind bars in America and moves toward compassion and treatment rather than punishment and incarceration. With empathy\, understanding\, and love\, we can build the political will needed to rectify the damage caused by the incarceration industry on individuals\, families\, and our society. \nhttps://www.thedreamcorps.org/our-programs/cut50/campaigns/day-of-empathy/

SUMMARY:UPAN Monthly Meeting | Topic: Overcoming Adversity and Impacting Positive Change in Our Prison Educational System with Guest Speaker Mark Hugentobler
DESCRIPTION:UPAN Monthly Meeting\nGuest speaker Mark “Coach” Hugentobler is a well-esteemed educator having served as a high school teacher\, basketball\, and cross country coach for over 25 years. He recently retired in 2019 after cultivating an adult male inmate education program for 8 years as Principal of the Central Utah Academy (CUA) at the Central Utah Correctional Facility (CUCF) in Gunnison\, Utah. Mr. Hugentobler has written a book that serves as an account of how a group of teachers\, inmates and corrections staff overcame adversity and effected real change inside the Gunnison prison. Mr. Hugentobler will share some of his experiences and lessons learned from his time teaching\, and hopefully inspire others to strive to impact positive change in our system. Mr. Hugentobler was the UPAN guest speaker at the May 2018 monthly meeting and a summary can be found in the May 2018 UPAN Newsletter. \nMark Hugentobler Biography\nMark Hugentobler graduated Magna Cum Laude from Weber State College in 1984 with a BS in Mathematics\, Physical Science and Computer Technology and later graduated Cum Laude with a Master’s from Utah State University in Gifted and Talented Education. Shortly after that\, he received his Administrative Endorsement from Utah State University. For over 25 years he worked as a high school teacher and coach. During that time\, he served as an algebra teacher and coached at various times\, Cross Country and Basketball. Coaching Cross Country for 11 years\, his Cross Country teams won the state championships in 1988 and 1993. Coaching basketball\, Mark’s basketball teams earned State Titles in 1996\, 2003 and 2008 as well as multiple regional titles. Mark’s work in the classroom has also been recognized. He was considered a master teacher through most of his tenure. In 2010 he received the KSL Teacher Feature award and then in 2017 was honored by the Utah Education Network (UEN)\, UAACCE as the Outstanding Adult Educator. Mark has always appreciated the many young (and more recently older) people he has worked with over the years and credits them for his successes. Mark is very active in his church. He and his wife Angie live in Central Utah and are the parents of 5 children. \nPreface\nThough I truly loved my job in the prison\, in the spring of 2019 I made the decision to retire. I had spent 34 years in the education system\, the last eight working at the Central Utah Academy (CUA)\, inside Central Utah Correctional Facility (CUCF) in Gunnison\, Utah. \nMy wife and I were on our way to Cedar City\, Utah\, to attend the annual Adult Education Directors Meeting and were reminiscing on my previous eight years. I had so many stories and experiences and names. It was enjoyable. As I thought through the many events of those eight years I suggested to my wife that it seemed that all my friends are felons. Along the conversation\, Angie mused that I ought to write a book. We both laughed while contemplating the possibility. \nOur trip to southern Utah included a visit to the Washington County Correctional Facility\, Purgatory. Several years prior\, inside CUCF\, we started a computer coding program for the inmates that we later shared with several county jails throughout the state. Purgatory was one of those facilities. I wanted to go and support their new computer coding venture. \nWe are all broken. That’s how the light gets in.\nErnest Hemingway \nAs I entered the jail and made my way through security\, the director and I walked into the large classroom. At the desk in the corner sat the inmate tutor. I immediately recognized him as a previous student from CUCF. He greeted me warmly and we visited about his life since CUCF. A short time later\, the classroom began to fill with student/inmates\, about 25 or so. Among them I recognized a half dozen\, knowing four by name. When they saw me\, they all approached and expressed their appreciation that I had come to visit. After that exchange\, I turned to the director and with a wry look on my face said\, “All my friends are felons.” His response was immediate\, “That sounds like the perfect title for a book.” \nSeveral hours later as I climbed back in the car\, I told my wife of that exchange and well\, here we are. I determined to write a book. \nAbout the Book\n \nImagine your perspective if you are the one who is incarcerated: You have done something terrible to others and fully deserve it. You may have grown up “on the streets” or may have had a good life that you threw away because of some terrible choices. You are now stuck behind bars. You want to change but everything around you prevents it. Everywhere you look there is rampant corruption. You feel like you are living in a cesspool. Every day you worry that you will anger the wrong person\, inmate or guard. Every day you wonder if this will be the day that you are beat up or thrown in Special Management Unit (SMU\, a secure holding cell)\, sent to a county jail or worse. Every time you dare think you can change and make the attempt to do so\, the reality of where you are\, and all the obstacles\, including the “system” are staring you down. \nImagine you are a guard: getting up every day with no hope. Imagine going to work every day knowing full well that the environment where you are going is hopeless and meaningless. In the beginning you had hope. You are charged to guard inmates. You imagined you could make a difference. You thought that you could help. After a short time\, however\, you realized that the system and the environment are too overwhelming to do anything positive. Every time you try\, you run into a roadblock within the system. You are criticized for trying to create meaningful change. You are told that it won’t make a difference. You are told that those you wanted to help don’t deserve it. You are considered a traitor because of the “us vs them” attitude that prevails at your work place. You are stuck in a job that provides little in the way of positive outcome for you or for the people you are supposed to be serving. You spend your day in boredom. \nNow imagine my perspective as an educator and seeing 1\,500 students who need help\, lots of help. Many of these students made grave mistakes. Most have done serious damage to someone or something. Many were remorseful but saw no clear path to correcting their behavior. In fact\, they are living in a world that encourages and develops criminal behavior. Imagine being there with your “students” and having your hands tied. Your responsibility to help is real. However\, because of a broken system\, you are not allowed to do anything positive. You come every day to work with 200 students who are mostly passive. You know full well that there are many\, many more out there who need your help\, though they may not want it. Your predecessors told you that you would have nothing to do\, that you would spend your days reading the paper and standing in the hall during “movement” of prisoners between classes. They advised you to keep your door closed so as to not invite the “students” in. \nIMAGINE \nHope lies in dreams\, in imagination\, and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality…\nJonas Salk \nImagine\, through either providence or sheer dumb luck\, that\, you as an educator\, find your way to help all these parties see a better path. In your daily interaction with these “students” and their jailors\, as well as your faculty and staff – eliciting the help of all – you are able to see the many flaws in the current system and develop a program that\, in a small way\, opens the path and opportunity of growth for many of them. Imagine a grown man\, 58 years old\, standing in the doorway of your office pitching a fit because he had to come to school. Then imagine him two and a half years later as he stands in the same doorway\, this time in tears\, thanking you and your staff for the opportunity of learning. For the first time in his life he felt he has hope for the future. Imagine an officer\, who at the beginning of your tenure\, was critical and mocking as you started to try to make change. Now he comes to see you before you retire\, thanking you for the positive effect the changes have had on those with whom he worked\, as well as on himself. He was dreading the “next 15 years” but now comes to work with hope and a vision. \nThis is an account of how our group of teachers\, inmates and some Corrections staff\, over the course of eight years\, effected real change inside the Gunnison prison (CUCF). \n

SUMMARY:UPAN Monthly Meeting | Topic: Film Screening UNTOUCHABLE
DESCRIPTION:UPAN Monthly Meeting – Special Event Extended Time\nScreening of the documentary film UNTOUCHABLE\, produced by David Fiege. When the most powerful lobbyist in Florida discovers that the nanny has sexually abused his daughter\, he harnesses his extraordinary political power to pass the toughest sex offender laws in the nation. UNTOUCHABLE chronicles his crusade\, and its impact on the lives of several of the 800\,000 people forced to live under the kinds of laws he has championed. The film interweaves intimate portraits of men and women who have been branded sex offenders with the heartbreaking stories of those who have suffered sexual abuse. It is a film that pushes viewers toward an uncomfortable place\, requiring them to walk in the shoes of those who have survived sexual abuse\, but to still bear witness to the experiences of those we revile. Free and open to the public. \n \nUNTOUCHABLE – Festival Trailer from Meerkat Media on Vimeo.

SUMMARY:UPAN Monthly Meeting | Topic: Higher Education in Prison
DESCRIPTION:UPAN Monthly Meeting | April 8th\, 2019 | Higher Education in Prison\n  \n \nPlease join the Utah Prisoner Advocate Network (UPAN) for our regular monthly meeting. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Cindy Fierros\, Associate Director of Programming for the University of Utah Prison Education Project (UPEP). She will be discussing UPEP initiatives in higher education for the incarcerated\, as well as available programs and volunteering opportunities. UPAN will be streaming the event on Facebook Live. Free and open to the public. \nAbout UPEP\nThe University of Utah Prison Education Project (UPEP) seeks to transform the field of higher education in prison through quality education\, research\, and outreach. UPEP fosters a culture of sustained and rigorous academic inquiry inside two facilities in the Utah State Prison in Draper\, Timpanogos and Wasatch. They work to create lasting impact in our state and communities by investing in people and providing them the tools necessary for empowerment and lifelong learning. UPEP grew out of the 2016-2017 Honors Praxis Lab\, Education\, Incarceration\, and Justice. They have worked in partnership with prominent college-in-prison programs across the country to build the infrastructure for UPEP and have designed UPEP in accordance with best practices established by the Alliance for Higher Education in Prison\, a coalition of quality college-in-prison programs\, to provide quality higher education in Draper. \nPrograms\nThe Utah Prison Education Project offers classes at two facilities at the Utah State Prison in Draper: Timpanogos (women) and Wasatch (men). Draper is located about 21 miles south of Salt Lake City. \nUPEP supports incarcerated students as they explore their world and themselves through reading\, writing and discussion inherent in our liberal arts and science-based curriculum. We challenge our students and volunteers to become agents of change in their communities and society at large. We believe that through access to quality higher education\, all people can better participate in creating a more just and equitable world. UPEP is the only four-year\, regionally accredited institution in the state of Utah providing consistent face-to-face instruction inside Utah prisons. \nWe work closely with Salt Lake Community College to provide a transfer pathway inside the Utah State Prison. Establishing an accredited degree-granting pathway inside Utah State prisons is a strategic goal of our project. We work with prison partners to mobilize the following pathway for students: \n \nAt this time\, UPEP is a non-credit program. We are actively fundraising to cover costs associated with enrollment. All costs associated with attendance are covered by the Project. Incarcerated students are not asked to financially pay for participation in UPEP. \nStudents are supported in their coursework and intellectual inquiry by faculty\, resource room volunteers\, library offerings\, lecture series\, and rigorous coursework. \nUPEP facilitates admissions processes on an annual basis\, in alignment with the University of Utah admissions calendar. Anyone can apply to UPEP\, but at this time we only are able to serve students housed in Timpanogos and Wasatch. \nSpring 2018 we are offering Creative Writing and Bus 2600: Survey Accounting. \nEducational Resources\nWant to know more about College in Prison Programs? DESCRIPTION:Day of Empathy is a national day of action to generate empathy on a massive scale for millions of Americans impacted by the criminal justice system.\nIn order to reform our criminal justice system\, we must first humanize and empathize with those who are impacted by it. This includes crime survivors and those who have committed crimes. \nThe Day of Empathy highlights the need for #JusticeReformNOW and shares the perspectives of Americans impacted by the current justice system – from survivors of violent crime to those who are addicted to opioids or other drugs and those who mentally ill to incarcerated individuals working to transform themselves\, people with a criminal record desperately seeking a second chance\, and all community members impacted by crime\, public safety\, and violence. \nWithout empathy\, we cannot achieve meaningful policy changes that keep our communities safe\, our families whole\, and our economy strong. \nThere are thousands of people – mothers\, daughters\, children – who have stories to tell. \nThe Day of Empathy shines a light on people impacted by the criminal justice system\, uplift their voices\, and win over hearts and minds towards the idea that transformation is possible. \nHow we do this:\n\nOn March 6th\, organizations across the country activate for a single day of action to spotlight their local efforts and unite under a unified banner to highlight the strength of the bipartisan criminal justice reform movement.\n\n\n“Ambassadors of Empathy” meet with elected officials in State capitols and Governors’ offices across the country. They share their experiences and how they have been impacted by the criminal justice system. Legislators gain first-hand experience of the human consequences of a criminal justice system that has gotten too big\, too unfair\, and too brutal.\n\n\nThe Day of Empathy features storytelling\, digital media\, and virtual reality content to humanize formerly incarcerated people\, survivors of violent crime\, and millions of others. By delivering a set of powerful\, emotional experiences to lawmakers and fellow Americans\, the Day of Empathy accelerates the bipartisan drive to create more effective\, efficient\, and humane criminal justice system.\n\nVisit our National Day of Empathy site here! \n
