SUMMARY:UPAN Meeting - April 2017
DESCRIPTION:Join UPAN for Our April Meeting With A Post-Conviction Attorney Panel\nMany people have no idea what course to take after the verdict has been handed down and their loved one ends up in prison on an indeterminate sentence. Attorneys Lorenzo Miller and Patrick Shea will make up a panel of post-conviction attorneys to talk about issues related to appeals\, board hearing preparation\, what services an attorney can provide to help an inmate and family prepare for a hearing\, etc. Please note that UPAN does not endorse specific attorneys or offer legal advice\, but we feel it would be beneficial for advocates to hear from experts in their field on the matter. Questions will be submitted beforehand in writing in order to keep the forum orderly and on topic. Please let one of the UPAN staff know prior to the meeting if you would like our guests to address a certain topic. Free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:NOT FOR RENT! Film Release at Weber State University
DESCRIPTION:NOT FOR RENT! Film Release at Weber State University\nNOT FOR RENT!\, Metamora Films latest documentary film is being released and screened at Weber State University in Ogden\, Utah. The feature length documentary film looks at rental housing barriers ex-felons face as they attempt to rebuild their lives in our communities. With over 95% of the American prison population being released at some point in the future\, millions of ex-inmates struggle with ‘red tape’ and strict criminal history rental requirements property managers and landlords enforce. In this unique and powerful film\, you’ll meet several people who’ve been personally affected by housing restrictions due to felony convictions. \nThe film screening is scheduled for April 5th\, 2017 from 12:30pm to 2:30pm at the Wildcat Theater. The event is FREE and open to the public including Weber State students who will receive community engagement credit for attending the event. Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Monica Williams\, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Weber State\, University\, the film release is part of the Engaged Learning Series\, which is a university-wide series of events designed to engage students\, faculty\, staff\, and community in discussion\, debate\, dialogue\, learning\, and action around an issue of public concern. For 2017\, the series aims to raise awareness\, improve personal behavior\, and increase public engagement around the issue of “privilege.” In addition to the screening of NOT FOR RENT!\, there will be guest speakers\, a Q&A with the film’s director\, Matt Duhamel\, and a social hour with free lunch catered by Sodexho. \nThe Utah Prisoner Advocate Network (UPAN) will be present as a vendor with information on their organization\, mission statement and how you can get involved in prisoner advocacy work in Utah and beyond. \nRSVP Today! \nOFFICIAL FILM TRAILER:\nhttps://vimeo.com/194917206 \nDATE AND TIME\n\nWed\, April 5\, 2017\n12:30 PM – 2:30 PM MDT\nAdd to Calendar \n\nLOCATION\n\n3910 W Campus Drive\nShepard Union Building\n(Wildcat Theater\, 2nd Floor)\nOgden\, UT 84403 \n\nFAQs: \nAre there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? \n\nNo\, but the film does contain some adult language.\n\nHow can I contact the organizer with any questions? \n\nYou can contact Matt Duhamel at:  mattd@metamorafilms.org or 385-290-7940 (cell)

SUMMARY:#Cut50 National Day of Empathy
DESCRIPTION:#Cut50 National Day of Empathy – Presented by League of Allies and UPAN\nBritnee Webb of League of Allies\, UPAN and others areorganizing an event focusing on creating empathy & humanizing the experience of prisoners and their families. Guest speakers\, open forum\, more info to come. Please invite anyone interested. We would love to have former inmates & their families present to speak in the forum. Ideally we want state officials\, legislators & policymakers present\, because this is who we are humanizing the experience for. We want them to see our inmates as more than numbers. \nAbout #DayOfEmpathy\n\n\n\nDay of Empathy is a national day of action to generate empathy on a massive scale for millions of Americans impacted by the criminal justice system.\n\nIn order to reform our criminal justice system\, we must first humanize and empathize with those who are impacted by it.\nThe Day of Empathy will highlight the needs and share the perspectives of Americans impacted by the current justice system – from survivors of violent crime\, those who are addicted or mentally ill\, incarcerated individuals working to transform themselves\, people with a criminal record desperately seeking a second chance\, and all community members impacted by crime\, public safety\, and violence. \nWithout empathy\, we cannot achieve meaningful policy changes that keep our communities safe\, our families whole\, and our economy strong. \nThere are thousands of people – mothers\, daughters\, children – who have stories to tell. \nThe Day of Empathy will shine a light on people impacted by the criminal justice system\, uplift their voices\, and win over hearts and minds towards the idea that transformation is possible.\nHOW WE’LL DO THIS\n\nOn March 1st\, 2017 organizations across the country will be activated for a single day of action to spotlight their local efforts and unite under a unified banner to highlight the strength of the bipartisan criminal justice reform movement.\n“Ambassadors of Empathy” will meet with elected officials in State capitols and Governors’ offices across the country. They will share their experiences and how they have been impacted by the criminal justice system. Legislators will gain first-hand experience of the human consequences of a criminal justice system that has gotten too big\, too unfair\, and too brutal.\nThe Day of Empathy will feature storytelling\, digital media\, and virtual  realitycontent to humanize formerly incarcerated people\, survivors of violent crime\, and millions of others. By delivering a set of powerful\, emotional experiences to lawmakers and fellow Americans\, the Day of Empathy will accelerate the bipartisan drive to create more effective\, efficient\, and humane criminal justice system.\n\nOUR TEAM\nWe have teamed up with storytellers\, media industry insiders\, technology leaders and policy experts with direct access to leaders in the U.S. Congress\, the White House\, criminal justice activists\, major news outlets and technology pioneers.

Rather\, we hope this event will offer opportunities for:  \n\n\n\n\nNetworking with other advocates\, activists and concerned community members! \nSharing ideas to make programs and services stronger\, to better help people trapped in the criminal justice system! \nRecruiting new volunteers for your organization…or finding excellent volunteer oppotunities for yourself! \nBrainstorming through challenges in working toward reform\, or working with justice-involved folks!\n\nHelping each other to overcome obstacles in policy\, practice and culture! \nLearning how to help advocate for change at the state and local levels!\n\n\n8:30 to 9:00 – Event Check-In & Refreshments\n\nEnjoy some breakfast treats\, coffee and other goodies.\nGet your event information\, including a list of other activists and organizations in attendance; and news about cool volunteer opportunities and advocacy actions.\n\n9:00 to 9:45 – Welcome & Reports from the Community Frontlines\n\nOur event sponsors will welcome everyone with inspiring words.\nParticipants from past “Faith in Reform” events will give updates on their progress in the last year\, and give us all a sense of what is possible when good-hearted and hard-working people come together to make life better for others.\n\n10:00 to 12:15 – Break-Out Dialogues on BIG ISSUES in criminal justice reform & services in Utah\n\nLegislative ACTION OPPORTUNITIES for 2017 – Learn what’s happening during the 2017 Legislative Session (including Juvenile Justice reform\, ending discriminatory Good Landlord Programs\, and abolishing the death penalty) and how YOU can make a difference.\nVOLUNTEERISM: Needs\, Interests & Challenges – Are you looking to recruit volunteers for your program or service? Would you like to BE a volunteer in some part of the criminal justice system? This workshop is for you. We invite current and potential volunteers\, as well as volunteer managers/coordinators\, to come ready to share frustrations and “Lessons Learned” about working with the Department of Corrections\, local county jails\, state and county health/housing/other agencies\, and other community groups.\n“There Should Be a Program…” – Through our work\, we often encounter unique and specific needs that are very serious\, yet mostly unmet through current programs and services. This will be an open conversation about ignored communities\, places where people “fall through the cracks\,” ideas about taking better care of people\, and more.\n\n12:30 to 1:30 – FREE Networking Lunch!\n\nEnjoy free refreshments while making YOUR plans to contribute to criminal justice reform in 2017.\nBe sure to collect business cards and contact info from the other activists and concerned community members you meet!\n\n1:45 to 2:30 – Wrap-Up & Participant OPEN MIC!\n\nSome final reflections and “Action Step” challenges from our event sponsors.\nYour chance at the microphone to make a pitch for program volunteers\, share an inspiring moment from the day\, recruit other activists to your reform campaign or anything else that moves you in the moment.\n\nWe invite you to share this link with your colleagues\, friends\, family and partners in advocacy\, so that they can join us as well. Space is VERY limited\, RSVPs required. \nThis event is FREE and open to the public! We do encourage a donation of $5\, if you can spare it\, to help cover the costs of food and materials. BUT don’t let $$$ keep you away\, we want you to come no matter what. You don’t need to be a person of faith\, or involved with a religious community to attend “Faith in Reform.” It’s perfectly fine to just have a little faith that reform is possible when we all work together!

SUMMARY:UPAN Monthly Meeting - August 2016
DESCRIPTION:The Impact of Sex Offender Registries on Offenders and Families\n \nPlease join UPAN for our next monthly meeting\, presented by Matt Duhamel\, Metamora Films. This is the presentation he made at the 2016 Prisoner Family Conference in Texas earlier this year. Matt Duhamel\, a former TV news and radio personality\, has turned his attention to helping others through the power of independent film. He agrees with the idea that film can help individuals\, communities and entire societies by increasing compassion\, tolerance\, understanding and forgiveness. By learning from his own personal trials and past failures\, Matt uses his experiences as life changing tools and applies them to his thought-provoking films. You may have noticed Matt and Heather Duhamel attending several of the past UPAN meetings filming for his current production called\, “Not for Rent!” about ex-inmates’ struggles with the Utah Good Landlord Program. We are very excited to have Matt as a guest speaker\, you’ll not want to miss his presentation. Free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:UPAN Monthly Meeting - May 2016
DESCRIPTION:Please join UPAN for our next monthly meeting. Our guest will be Andrew McCullough who will be running for Utah Attorney General. We will hear from him about what the AG office does. UPAN families can share with him their concerns about Criminal Justice Issues in Utah. While the AG’s office doesn’t have a significant role in criminal justice reform\, it does sometimes push legislation that impacts the criminal justice system\, and not always for the better. It is also our understanding that the Attorney General’s office works under the Governor\, so that office COULD have some influence in how the Governor approaches criminal justice reform. Free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:FOCUS Meeting - March 2016
DESCRIPTION:Please Attend the Next FOCUS Meeting\nAs of January 2016\, there are some changes to the bi-monthly FOCUS meeting. Steve Turley\, Director of Special Projects\, will no longer be facilitating these meetings. This was disheartening to hear\, as Steve has been a calm anchor in sometimes emotional meetings\, and we will miss him. We do understand that he has bigger assignments on the table with the new Utah State Prison being planned. UPAN directors are pleased that Brooke Adams\, the Public Information Officer for the UDC will be taking over the duties of hosting FOCUS meetings. Brooke has a history of working to assist UPAN with various issues. Brooke is already organizing the upcoming meetings. She is arranging to host the group in a larger conference room within the Adult Probation and Parole Region 3 office located at 36 West Fremont Ave. (1100 South) in Salt Lake City. The meeting time will remain 6 – 8 p.m. \nUse of a larger meeting room will require all attendees to be escorted back past the reception area to reach it so it is important that we be as punctual as possible! \nTransition from Prison to Parole\nWe are interested and excited to attend the March meeting because the topic is on the Transition Initiatives within the UDC. Parole success is an interest of UPAN that often gets pushed to the back burner\, especially with all the focus on a new prison\, criminal justice reform\, and other crises as they arise. We have talked about it over the past two years. Under the administration of Rollin Cook\, and through a lot of work and organization within UDC in this area over the last year\, there are some programs now in place within the system to facilitate the success of individuals when they transition out of prison and into the community. There will be four presenters at the FOCUS meeting and the agenda is: \n\nTransition Agents: Who are they and what are they doing to assist as people leave incarceration?\nThe Family Psychology Program: What is it and how is it bringing inmates\, their family members and children together inside the prison? (UPAN believes this is limited to women)\nTransition Mentoring: What is the transition mentoring program\, who is involved\, and how is it working?\nThe LIFE Program: What is it and how is it helping inmates and their families prepare for reunification? This has been piloted at CUCF and will likely be introduced in 2016 at the Utah State Prison in Draper.\n\n  \nEach presentation will take about 15 to 20 minutes\, leaving plenty of time for questions and follow up. They will present a slide show of these programs in action for us to see. \nWe ENCOURAGE everyone in attendance to come prepared to FOCUS on the presentations and topic so that we can get the most out of it. If there are other topics you would like to see covered in future meetings\, please contact Brooke Adams at: brookeadams@utah.gov. \nAbout FOCUS\nFOCUS meetings are held every other month on the first Monday of the month. The Utah Department of Corrections invites interested community members to attend a discussion forum at the Region 3 Adult Probation & Parole office in Salt Lake City. \nDiscussion topics are pre-determined to ensure the most knowledgeable presenters are on hand. Past topics have included the Drug Offender Reform Act (DORA)\, a presentation by the Utah Board of Pardons & Parole\, an overview of Adult Probation & Parole’s Northern Utah office\, and an introduction to new wardens. \nMore information: Contact Brooke Adams\, Public Information Officer\, at brookeadams@utah.gov or 801-545-5536. \nPLEASE NOTE: In addition to FOCUS\, the department has set up numerous ways for the public to interact with us on a daily\, ongoing basis — rather than wait months for another quarterly meeting. These include phone calls\, in-person meetings\, e-mails\, this website (Ask A Question forum via UDC homepage) as well as social media and UDC Press Releases. SUMMARY:UPAN Monthly Meeting - January 2016
DESCRIPTION:Get to know your Legislator (Bring Your Legislator To UPAN Meeting)\nWe are asking our UPAN participants to contact their local representatives and senators and invite them to our January 2016 meeting. You can find out who they are by going to: le.utah.gov. E-mail them\, call them\, and send them a written invitation. This will only be successful if we all do our part to invite them! \nIf you wish to speak at this meeting\, please arrive about 10 – 15 minutes early to sign up on the speakers list. We will begin on time at 6:30 p.m. \nAgenda & Objectives\n\nThis will put a face to the names we hear about up on the Hill. And they will get to put a face to the constituents they represent.\nWe can give first hand stories about the real people being affected by the laws they are passing.\nWe can let them know what we would like to see happen with new criminal justice reform. This will be accomplished the same way we did when Ron Gordon of the CCJJ came. There will be a list for participants (you) to sign up in order to speak. Each speaker will get up to five minutes to express their views. We would like this to be a positive experience for all involved\, so no negativity will be accepted. Our representatives should come away with an appreciation of everything we as families\, and our incarcerated loved ones\, are going though. We hope to share\, ideas that continue to facilitate positive change. We need their help\, they need our experience\, and we need them to be on the side of truth\, fairness\, and healing. Free and open to the public.\n\nChange of Venue Notice\n \nDue to a problem with the heating system in the Draper Library\, we have been informed that our reservation for that location for our January 11th meeting is CANCELLED\, so our meeting venue has been moved to the Salt Lake City Public Library located in downtown Salt Lake at 210 East 400 South\, in the 4th Floor Conference Room. For those who have invited their legislators\, please notify them of the change in venue. The date and time has not changed. Also\, if you know other family members of inmates please help to inform them as well because our January Newsletter will not reach inmates in time for them to inform their families. \nParking at the Main Library\nAn underground parking facility can be accessed from eastbound 400 South between 200 and 300 East. Parking in this city-operated facility is free for the first half-hour\, then $1.50 per half-hour after that. Any vehicle displaying a disability special group license plate or disability windshield placard may park in the parking garage at Library Square for two hours with no charge. Additional time beyond the two hours is $1.50 per half-hour. This parking structure offers two electric vehicle charging stations located in the southeast corner of the lower level (P2) of the parking garage\, as well as two on-street electric vehicle charging stations located near the 500 South exit ramp (255 East 500 South). \nThere is some street parking\, but make sure you feed the meter and watch the time\, as they are not necessarily free after 6 p.m.
